Preventing Substance Abuse in Children: An Age-by-Age Guide for Parents

By El Mehdi Said

I have spent more than two decades working with young people and families on the front lines of substance abuse prevention. The single most important thing I have learned is this: prevention is not a conversation you have once. It is a relationship you build over years, starting far earlier than most parents imagine. This guide breaks that work down by age.

The foundation of prevention is laid before a child ever hears the word "drugs." At this age, the work is emotional. Help your child name what they feel — anger, sadness, frustration — and show them safe ways to handle big emotions. A child who learns at four that hitting is not the answer to anger is a child who, at fourteen, has one fewer reason to reach for a substance to cope.

Picture books help. Hands Are for Kindness was written for exactly this stage: giving little readers simple alternatives to acting out — stop, breathe, keep your hands safe, choose kindness.
