Stop Panicking About AI: The Machine Isn’t the Real Problem

First, calculators were going to destroy our ability to do math. Then spellcheck was going to make us forget how to spell. Word processors would ruin writing. Digital cameras would kill photography. Now artificial intelligence is coming for everything. At least, that is how the debate often sounds.

There is a reason people are worried. AI is not harmless, and it is not just another gadget. It can already summarize documents, produce advertising copy, translate text, generate images and complete routine office work in seconds. Some companies will use it to eliminate jobs. Some workers will be pushed aside. We should be honest about that.
